I have been looking for a book for my whole class to read together that teaches them about the importance of inclusion, compassion, and self-discovery while engaging them as a reader. I wanted my kids to enjoy discussing a novel that helped them to understand why it is important NOT to isolate people or marginalize others. I also wanted my kids to enjoy reading a well-written novel. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens meets all of my objectives for a book all of my students can read and understand life through a different lens. This novel shows what happens when we isolate "others", the lasting impact of childhood trauma, why compassion toward others is necessary, and the importance of perseverance. This book would allow discussion and deep thoughts so we can get closer to our individual truths.
