I teach kindergarten in a small town in North Carolina. Our school is committed to raising self directed lifelong learners. Our students are eager to meet this goal. They look forward to independent reading time when they have the chance to apply the reading strategies we discuss to the books they choose from our classroom library. My students know that to be successful, the books they are reading must "fit" them. The book they choose must have text features to support comprehension, and it must challenge them to think and apply new reading strategies. My students are enthusiastic about choosing new books and challenging themselves to understand and enjoy what they read. They thrive on taking responsibility for their learning and their growing love of reading.
