My students are from a vibrant urban area, many of whom experience an incredible amount of stress at school, home, and neighborhoods. This can get in the way of their academic, mental, and physical health. Since mental health disorders commonly develop in the teenage years, "Yoga may serve a preventive role in adolescent mental health," according to the new study, led by Jessica Noggle, PhD, of Brigham and Women's Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Boston. (Science Daily, 4/4/12). These are some of the most respectful, curious students I could ever hope to have. But I worry about their trauma, stress, and physical health. Yoga is a way to offer the students a way to connect with themselves, to focus on who they really are. Further, my students barely receive Physical Education. It is offered only during their freshman and sophomore years. Studies have shown that yoga as a regular practice can help lower blood pressure, reduce heart disease, and improve strength and balance.
