Special needs students may be overwhelmed by either sensory deprivation or sensory input. Either of these conditions distract the student and may cause them to become agitated, unfocused or anxious while attempting to pay attention to lessons in the classroom. Our goal is teach our students how to self regulate either sensory condition by providing a space in each classroom where they retreat for a short period of time to either release sensory overloads or to receive sensory stimulation. With these materials we can begin to address the sensory needs of our students. These materials represent the most immediate way to address stimulation issues while keeping the student in the classroom thus interdicting behaviors which could mistakenly lead to unnecessary discipline measures which are typically ineffective and causing the cycle to repeat.
