My students are a part of a region where only 12 of 100 students will receive a degree of any kind within six years of high school. My students are also much more than that. While they, like me, come from this educational wasteland, they also come from an area that is rich in culture. This culture shapes who my students are. It has taught them to be individuals who are warm, welcoming, generous, and respectful. It has taught them to embody the "whatever it takes" mindset of the charter school where I work. It has shown them the value of family and pride. These traits, which are the best of our region, are what you see in our school, but there is a whole other side to our school that many don't see. The majority of our students are living in poverty that most do not believe exists in this country. The academic gaps that they face are real and can even be daunting. Still, along with their families, they are utilizing everything their culture teaches to get to and through college.
