My 3rd grade class is hard working and loves any project assigned that lifts the lesson off of the page and makes it come to life. Their best thinking, creativity, and retention of important information seems motivated by any connection that can be made with a computer. Taking a virtual trip to the rain forest, listening to a famous speech, or practicing adjectives and multiplication facts are more fun when students can plug into a safe site to explore and technology affords me opportunities to share information and challenge my students beyond our limited textbooks.
Our school community is rural, and not every student has computer access at home yet. A few students have an e-reader or ipod, but those are often left at home for safe keeping. The computer lab schedule allows them one thirty minute session, which often fills with online assessments and benchmark testing. My students are growing up in a world where information is readily available and more attention getting than books.
