My students will be so excited to receive these materials in our classroom. They won't realize that they are learning about important people in our community. Instead they will be having fun pretending to be a doctor, fire fighter, mail carrier, and a teacher. They will be engaging in hands-on activities that will support their learning and help them make real life connections. These materials are versatile in that they can be used during structured, predictable and scripted lessons, as well as student directed activities. Students can hear and see what community helpers do, where they work, and how they dress. Then they can have the opportunity to show what they have learned by engaging in less structured, but social and interactive activities like playtime with the figurines, costumes, and blocks.
