The majority of my students come from a home that lacks opportunity. My school has 87% free or reduced lunches. Some of these children have never seen a book until they come to school for the first time! As a teacher, I have to work very hard to keep their interest and teach them valuable life skills they aren't getting them at home. A lot of my students are terrified to fail, because that is all they have been told their whole life. Some do not know where they will sleep that night; in a car, a friends sofa, or a shelter. These same children, however, WANT to learn; they want to be heard and understood. They enjoy coming to school where they get the only structure they have ever known. One way I can provide them literacy skills needed to be a productive part of society, is to teach from real literature. Textbooks have a bad rap for being boring and, frankly, hard to read. The books my team wants to use are meaningful and will get our students where they need to be to be successful.
