We are a K-2 primary school with an emphasis on thematic teaching and project based learning. I have 22 energetic and enthusiastic learners in my first grade classroom. We enjoy learning through an integrated curriculum, which means we incorporate skills across subject levels. We recently conducted a unit of study about trains, incorporating reading, math, geography and science. We even built a child-sized train out of cardboard and PVC pipe. We are looking forward to expanding our scope of research as we explore the vast entity of space. My students look forward to using non-fiction texts, of an appropriate reading level, to conduct research for their learning projects. Project -based learning allows students to apply critical thinking skills while exploring areas of interest. Reading about the stars teaches students a few facts; using text to research stars in order to build or create their own model before presenting their findings to peers, will teach students how to learn!
