My students come from good families and attend a good school. Most of them work hard to do their homework and carry a part-time job and participate in their club, youth program, or sports. Our school is good, but large. We have 2500 students from grades 10-12 (we don't include 9th graders). With classes of 40 students and computer labs of 30-35 computers, technology and materials are our most limited commodity. When students have the books, they read them. When they have the computers, they write and research (and play games when no one is looking). They can't read when they don't have what they need.
