My 44 fourth graders are curious, earnest learners who remind me each day of their desire to grow! Their enthusiasm for just about everything is truly contagious, and it's a joy to be their teacher. Our school serves a high-poverty, primarily Latino population in an urban area. A significant percentage of our students are learning English as a second language, which has intensified the need for superior language arts instruction. As a second-year institution, we welcomed students from many different types of schools around the city and are working diligently to address - and overcome - moderate to serious proficiency gaps. We place a huge emphasis on building strong relationships with parents and families through home visits, frequent face-to-face communication, and involving parents in our classrooms on a regular basis. This has undoubtedly supported the incredible progress my fourth graders have made so far!
