My students come from very diverse backgrounds. Our high school is the second most diverse school in Tennessee. I have many refugee students from Somalia, Sudan, Mexico, and Egypt. Many students are also from other countries such as Kurdistan, Ghana, Colombia. The list goes on. At the same time, other students have never left Nashville before and are limited in their experiences outside of home and school. I would describe my school as a struggling urban school (funding wise) that despite the circumstances still holds students to high expectations. Students fill them. They work very hard and know what it means to be engaged and focused. Many students are grade levels behind, but have been pushed through the system. I have students who cannot read well and others who do not know how to multiply but are in Algebra 2. Thus, stimulating their confidence and showing them they ARE capable is crucial.
