My students understand science better when they are actively doing something with the content being taught. The basic properties of matter are essential to the understanding of science the way computation is important to the understanding of math. Using beakers of water and blocks of varying densities will help students to actually see the what density is, and will allow students investigate the density of different materials. It is fun for the kids to make hypotheses about which objects they think will have more density, and then to actually find out right then. When learning is fun it is remembered. The application of those basic principles can be applied to better understanding of other science content, like the density of planets.
