Over half of our students qualify for free and reduced lunch programs, and a third of them are below grade level proficiency in reading ability. With current state budget cuts to education, there is no funding available for replacement books in the Language Arts Department budget, the Media Center Budget, or the school general fund. Since our PTSA has committed itself to fundraising for technology for the classrooms, purchasing books this year is not one of their priorities either. Many of our students have made it to 7th grade without ever having read an entire novel. Because most of them are quite shy about admitting their limitations in reading, it is essential to find literature that engages them and that they see themselves in. The Outsiders is just this kind of book. Our current dog-eared set of books communicates to our students that both reading and they themselves are not very important - the opposite of the message I am trying to give them.
