Struggling readers enjoy good literature if it shared in guided reading groups. During group discussions they are able to get get a clearer understanding of the words and expand their vocabulary. Expanding their vocabulary will help to make them life long readers and allow them to Read for Joy! In conversation we often use verbal shorthand, not full sentences. But the language in books is very rich, and there are complete sentences! Allowing students to experience a print rich classroom gives my students the opportunity to expand their horizons and develop a love of reading for themselves, rather than just for school.
