The poverty level of our school students grows each year. We have many working class families, struggling to get by. Every student in our school gets free breakfast and lunch through a program offered to our school because of these high poverty levels. My classroom is a special education classroom. Different groups of students come into my room all day long for help with reading and math. I also have students who come for behavioral support. Many of these students struggle to focus on their work and spend much of the time fidgeting and moving around in their chairs. Some students have sensory processing disorders, and the plastic chairs in my room cause them pain when they sit in them.
