My students are the most hard-working, dedicated, thoughtful group of 10 and 11 year olds I've ever met. As children of immigrant families, they are pushed everyday to succeed in school and live the lives their parents sacrificed so much to provide for them. Our school is in the top 5 poorest schools in Austin,a major city in TX. Most families are immigrant families, and 99% are minorities. Our school community support is strong and the relationships among teachers and parents is overwhelmingly close. Students walk to school, eat breakfast and lunch at school, and stay after school for various programs. You could say that the school is the center of the community, which gives teachers an awesome opportunity to make deeper gains in achievement. On any given day, you will see almost as many students in the school after instructional hours for some kind of activity as you would during the school day.
