I currently teach a wonderful group of first graders in a Title I school. Seventy-five percent of the students in my school receive free lunch, and approximately three-quarters of my students speak a second language. Given that many of my students are first-generation Americans, learning to read and write is especially difficult for them, as there is minimal support at home due to the language barrier. Although my students work hard and are motivated, the school's resources are limited in helping them.
