My students are from many diverse backgrounds and a low economic area. However, they come to school every day excited and motivated to learn. At 5 years old, they are teacher "pleasers" and can not wait to share everything. I have an extensive supply of books on cassette tape and the students love to listen to stories. The cassette player in my room was old when I started teaching and finally expired. There is a hole in our center activities and a wealth of great literature sitting waiting to be listened to by children. As I convert my listening library to Cds, I will also need portable CD players for the students to use during the Daily 5 rotations. My students are excited about reading and listening to books read fluently provides them with practice tracking print and the pleasure of fun, colorful books that keep them engaged in literacy.
