Most of my 170 students (95%) live far below the poverty line. I can relate to most of these students because I grew up where resources were scarce and hard to come by. We were studying light, refraction, reflection and energy conservation and management. These topics have a lot of media resources and I find it difficult to transmit this abstract knowledge using chalk and talk. A digital projector will definitely bring these topics to life as students interact with videos and a whole host of multimedia archives. Students will become more engaged and more engagement means better performance on the Regents and other state exams. It is true that the students I teach are living in poverty, with over 90% of them receiving free lunch, but that's just where they're starting. They have big dreams, but they need to work hard now if they are going to reach them.
