Most of these students come from disadvantaged neighborhoods and low income families. My students are very bright and full of energy. Sometimes being in a classroom where the expectation to sit still during an activity can be a struggle for students who need movement. Many students need movement to be able to pay attention and reduce behavior problems such as restlessness and impassivity. The most common behavior problems in the classroom that teachers see are a child’s lack of focus and inability to sit for an appropriate length of time. This behavior leads to the student not learning and retaining information. Children then feel overwhelmed and unsuccessful. To combat this the classroom can be adapted to meet the needs of the students through sensory devices. While students have lots of opportunities to get up and move around some students need a sensory device to help them focus though the ability to move during seat work such as writing and listening to guest speakers.
