Most of my sixth grade students were born and raised in our rural Oregon area. Many of their parents were as well. These are kids who have not been exposed to a great deal of museums, theater performances, world history, or what some would call culture. Most of them will never travel the world in person. They are, however, eager to learn and full of dreams! They ask me questions every day that make me think, laugh, and learn. Our K-8 school strives to open their eyes and their hearts to the rest of the world. Each morning, we watch a news program designed for students. They are fascinated by current events in other countries, and make striking insights about how it connects to their lives. In addition to my sixth grade homeroom, I teach fifth grade social studies for an hour each day. These kids are just at the verge of blooming into independent thinkers with a thirst for new knowledge!
