I teach in an early childhood special education program for children ages 3-5. We have 5 classrooms, which serve approximately 72 students. We also provide services to about 100 children in State Pre-K, Head Start Programs, and children who receive speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy. The children have a variety of needs and diagnoses. Some children have a diagnosis of Developmental Delay. Many of these children have communication delays and some are non-verbal. They may also have significant cognitive and/or academic delays. Our program also serves children with a diagnosis of autism. Children on this spectrum always have some delays and disorders in communication.
