Although our students come from various backgrounds, more than half of my students have a limited number of books at home. In fact, most of the books are from the classroom library or the school library. With an increase in class sizes, it has become a challenge to make sure that all of my students are provided with engaging literacy materials. Countless hours are spent creating reading stations and literacy games to encourage their love of reading. The stations are used by the students during our guided reading rotations. For example, while I am working with a small group of students, the other students are working in small groups independently until it is their turn to work with me. Over the years, the stations and books are subjected to considerable wear and tear and are now in need of updating.
