The students in my after school basketball study hall are usually struggling males who are required to attend by the coach or their parents in order to ensure academic success. They are usually not highly engaged in classes, and are used to mediocre or failing grades. Coaches want better. Student-athletes want better. To do better, they have to improve work habits and skill levels. They are young, focused on athletics, and unsure of the importance of their education. Energetic, active, and intelligent, they need exposure and success to build their desire to focus more on their classwork. They want to read things that are high interest, but have limited access. By having these magazines such as Winning Hoops, Sports Illustrated, and Basketball Times available in the room for reading after assignments are complete, there will be increased motivation to complete work, greater desire to read, and discussion of what was read. They will compete to get these magazines to read, and by their reading more, everyone wins.
