According to the Common Core State Standards, reading materials in 6th grade should be at least 75% informational text. However, on class surveys, most students like to read "interesting", "funny", "new" text. Traditional informational text is deemed boring to most young readers and do not reflect their cultures and interests. Materials that are interesting, current, and engaging are exactly what my students need and want. Students indicated that they also enjoyed learning about "animals", "sports", and "kids their age". Time for Kids and Ahora magazines often cover animals, kids/teens, and current events in our country or around the world. I will use the subscriptions as supplementary materials for students. Students will have a chance to read and learn about current events, cultures, and each other while practicing specific skills and standards. The sporting equipment will be used for P.E., class game time, promoting social growth, and for behavior rewards.
