I have taught at my middle school in Oregon for 18 years and have watched it grow into an amazingly diverse population. Our student body has 30 different languages spoken in their homes and 34% are English Language Learners. Budget cuts have made it difficult to provide students with truly innovative opportunities in the classroom, and with our free/reduced price lunch population at 52%, many families do not have the resources to provide invention-based experiences at home. Many of our students have aspirations to study science and engineering in college, and some will be the first in their family to pursue higher education. Our students thrive when they are actively learning and creating. They are most proud when they have produced something on their own.
