Many times, students have a disdain for reading any kind of material (textbooks, novels, picture books, magazines, passages in classroom work, etc). Reading is often associated with being a chore. However, most students are unaware of the joys that reading brings. In years past, I have introduced students to high-interest, high-engaging novels. This has encouraged students to seek books of the same genre or other books that the author has created. Most of all, I found that students connect to books that reflect their lives culturally and socially. The books that I have chosen have been very relatable to many students as a classroom read-aloud. I would love for my students to dig a bit deeper into these novels for class book clubs. In a book club, students have the privilege of discussing the plot and inferences with their peers. Students will also use the text to develop their writing skills as the fifth grade standards encourage writing using evidence from the text, both informational and fictional. Please help me encourage more students to read and write using their interests as their main motivation.
