My students are some of the most resilient people I have ever seen. They are thrown into a culture they aren't familiar with, surrounded by people speaking a language they don't understand. Some of them have been detained in immigration centers and others work with their parents cleaning houses on the weekend. They are living in an area where gangs, drugs, and violence are their normal. The schools they attend is a Title 1 school and every student receives free breakfast and lunch. And yet, they are still 5 years old. They want to Spiderman when they grow up and can't wait to show off the gap where they have just lost a tooth. They are happy to be at school and want to play and learn, just like all 5 year olds. They may face more problems than other kids in different schools, but it just means they need a little extra love and understanding. They are just as capable as their middle-class English speaking peers; we just need the resources to make that happen.
