I am seeking donations to build a classroom library for a new initiative I've started at my school. I have trained a team of seniors to serve as literacy mentors for 9th and 10th graders who struggle with reading. Research shows that the best way to become a stronger reader is to read! And yet, many of our students rarely read. For most, this can be solved by connecting them with the right book. This project will allow me to buy books at multiple levels that will engage my students and help them to fall in love with books. We work with small groups of 9th and 10th graders in 5 week sessions during which they get to choose a book to read and work in small groups with the senior mentors. Our first session was a great success--each of the students finished at least one book! But to continue the program with more students we need a larger variety of books at different grade levels and on different topics. In their exit surveys, students credited having a choice in what to read as the main factor in their reading success in my classroom.
