Kindergarten students learn through play and having engaging materials tied to real world creative problem solving activities will help my students connect academic vocabulary to concrete experiences.
The materials I am requesting are designed to connect real world science and engineering concepts to the developmental and interest level of a kindergarten student.
I will use the Engineer a Coaster Kit and the Design and Build Engineering Centers during Math and Science to get my students excited about building and creating. Each kit contains plans to follow to build roller coasters, cars, bridges and houses. Students will begin by reading plans and then creating plans of their own. The Building Brick STEM Challenge Kit will give my students practice in using the problem solving process in a fun and interactive way. The Water Way Pipe Builders and Create a Chain Reaction are highly engaging materials and will get my students excited about academic concepts in science (force and motion) and encourage collaboration as they share ideas and observations. It is my hope that as they interact with the blocks, tubes, magnets and marbles they will go from following plans and problems on activity cards to creating their own designs and asking, what if I do this or move that... and begin to solve problems of their own.
It is not enough to hear and see, young children need to experiment and create. Thank you for helping me encourage creative thinking in my classroom.
