We recruited our dyslexic and struggling K-2nd graders from both the inner city and suburbia. They are ethnically very mixed and about half are on free and reduced lunch. We wanted to catch them before they felt the sting of 'being different' in their inability to pick up reading as fast as other students, but we do have many that have suffered emotionally from situations where dyslexia is not addressed or accepted as a legitimate learning difference. This is a brand new public charter school and we have had a very challenging fall semester. However, it is all coming together and we are really seeing some gains.
