This year I have 25 amazing 5 and 6 year olds in my Kindergarten classroom. Every child begins the school day ready and eager to learn. Their academic abilities range from nonreaders just learning the alphabet to students reading on a first grade level. The socio-economic status of my students is very diverse as well. Over half of my students receive free or reduced lunch. The majority of my students do not have access to technology outside of the classroom setting. The diversity within my classroom makes differentiating instruction difficult at times. This year our school is focusing on improving reading and math scores as well as integrating the new Common Core State Standards into daily instruction. We feel that our focus should be on improving how we present and build upon basic foundational skills such as reading fluency and comprehension. This project will help me to differentiate the way I will achieve this goal in my own classroom setting.
