We are a small second grade class of just 12 students located in a very rural area of Southern Maine. Our district is in need of many things (like most) but with the overwhelming support of our community we always have everything we need. This year, my students began to realize as we have been Skyping our way trough the nation, that not all students-not all schools are as lucky. So, they decided to take part in "The Pencil Project" in order to help students who are not as fortunate. We were partnered with a school in Montgomery, Alabama that enrolls 766 students grades K-6. Of the 766 enrolled, 98% receive free or reduced hot lunch. Needless to say, even the school supplies, like pencils, we take for granted each day here in our classroom, are a very real struggle for the teachers and students at our sponsored school. My students have truly taken ownership of this project and are taking a great sense of pride in doing right by helping others.
