"Oh, yeah, I know what that is. I just didn't know what it was called in English." This is a comment I hear in my 4th grade Language Arts classroom almost every day. I am incredibly grateful to be working with the population I have always wanted to work with. My students are all new immigrants to the United States, and all of them are acquiring English as their second language. Though many of them have rich language knowledge in their native language (my classroom consists of 4 different languages from 7 countries), many of them do not know the name of common objects in English. Giving them a picture of a particular object does more for explaining to them what that given object is than any verbal explanation could ever provide.
