Poverty and parental engagement are barriers to learning for many of our students. At least 65% of our students qualify for the USDA's Free/Reduced Meal program. Brigance and kindergarten screening tools and iReady baseline assessment scores indicate a significant number of incoming kindergartners are not school ready. Limited life/family experiences negatively impact academic success. Many more of our students are not exposed to high quality literature in their homes. Everyday learning opportunities are limited as parents are busy with their own schooling, jobs, and/or careers. Severe student and family mental health issues play a significant role in our students' attention levels, and ability perform at their best. There is a need to provide direct instruction in a manner that links learning to everyday life events.
