I teach 45 6th, 7th and 8th grade students in the inner city of Washington DC. They come from a poor socioeconomic background. 100% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. Many of the students read below grade level. Nevertheless, this year, I have been teaching them core reading strategies that have improved their reading comprehension levels significantly. I am also teaching them the wonderful world of reading and how it can open new doors of opportunity, advancement and imagination for them. The most wonderful thing is that they are catching the "fever" for reading. To explain, I see them checking out books at their local libraries, observing and creating book trailers of the latest teen novels on School Tube and reading during their down time. I also notice the love for learning through reading. The light in their eyes as they learn about a new book or discover a new clue to a mystery is priceless. Yet, our classroom library is very sparse and we need new books.
