My school is a great small public charter school. We have the best intentions and work super-hard, but our funding is a tremendous challenge. We are currently unable to purchase supplies as funding is very short this year. Seventy percent of our students qualify for free and reduced-priced meals. Many are from single parent households. (Fifty percent of my first graders are living with one parent.) The first graders are full of energy and excited to be in school daily. They work hard each and every day, and they want to do well. Of course, they aren't perfect. We have our challenges with behavior daily, and we teach them to show kindness and communicate with each other. They are learning, and they are making consistent progress. They really are a sweet group of first graders.
