I am an intervention teacher in Flint, MI. 80% of the students in my school need intervention services. Meaning that 80% of the school population is academically below 50% of their peers in the US. The students I teach have dealt with some of the following issues: lead poisoning due to poisoned public water, extreme poverty, victim or witness to physical, mental or sexual abuse, absentee parent(s), parent(s) addicted to drugs/alcohol, personally viewed parent's death or murder, incarcerated parent(s). The most heart wrenching thought is that there are some students who are dealing with all of the above listed issues. Imagine those grim scenarios, if you were a student dealing with these problems, could you go to school and study? These students have a resilience that is beyond amazing. They want to learn and want to succeed in life. Please help me continue to show them that their future is bright.
