I teach physics, and I am also the head coach for the robotics team. Between 40 and 50 students are on the team currently, representing all high school grades. My robotics team students work year-round, improving their skills in various technical areas. Students learn to design with CAD, while others learn to program control systems. Some have become experts in machining, while others specialize in electronics and wiring. Even though there are areas of specialization, everyone takes part in each phase of robot design and building when the season begins in January. Only 6 weeks is given in the FIRST Robotics competition to complete the competitive robot. During this season, they become the most dedicated people I have ever witnessed. In this season and throughout the year, these students learn more useful engineering and science than they do in just about any class. My school has a dramatically wide socioeconomic representation.
