Science is at the heart of the United States ability to continue to innovate, lead, and create the jobs of the future. Students need to be able to use scientific tools to access the Next Generation Science Standards using the Agricultural Sciences as a focus. With new microscopes students will be able to compare and contrast a variety of animal and plant cells. Students kindergarten through 8th grade will have the opportunity to examine the small structures that make up living organisms. Using microscopes are so important because they feature hands-on learning, is not selective for any one branch of science, involves doing, seeing, thinking, questioning, and discussing, can be open-ended since the young students will utilize their native curiosity to look at additional specimens of their choice, and raises early interest in student to guide them into career pathways. In the next few months our school will be building a two acre farm and we are excited to use results from our microscope observations in real life scenarios out on the farm. There's no better way to introduce our students to understanding the intricate and delicate balance of nature. We would like to create a agricultural science lab classroom designed to enable students to to participate in hands-on, standards based labs before we go out to the field. We would like to include engaging microscope experiments that tie agriculture to a standards based curriculum. Most labs would culminate with career connections highlighting careers in agriculture.
