My students are willing and able to be readers engaged in great text and mathematicians wrestling with complex problems. But many of them lack the conceptual development that comes from a language rich home. And they haven't had hands-on experiences outside of school that broaden and deepen understanding of new concepts they encounter in math and reading. Our school is Title I, with move than half free and reduced lunch, and a 41% mobility rate due to the school boundaries serving 19 apartment complexes. This last point creates a significant impact on learning (and teaching) in our school. New Common Core State Standards are quite rigorous, and the level of language expected to comprehend and produce has been greatly increased. Our ESL population continues to increase as the demographics of our state are changing, and the poverty surrounding our school is not going to go away.
