Our students are highly motivated and high-achieving, and they come from a huge range of backgrounds. Forty-four percent of students qualify for Free and Reduced Lunch. Roughly 30% of students are Hispanic, 30% are African-American and 30% are white. Over the past ten years, 100% of our graduates have been accepted to four-year colleges. To show how motivated our students are, I hardly need to say anything more than: starting a school library was their idea. Along with Reading Intervention classes, I teach a 9th and 10th-grade elective called Book Club. My twenty students are passionate, vocal book-lovers. After reading literature together and discussing the purpose and importance of reading for a semester, they realized that not having a school library is a travesty. They decided to take action. The students petitioned to receive school-funding, and they're planning book-drives and fund-raisers to bring more books to our school.
