My students come from the school of hard knocks. They don't take anything for granted. They struggle with homelessness, poverty, and an array of obstacles that make coming to school in the morning an accomplishment that many people can't fully appreciate. For them, school is just another struggle--something they have never been good at, a place where they have always gotten into trouble, a place where they experience failure. In our classroom, I work to change their perception of themselves by showing that they CAN do it, that they do have critical minds, and that with the right tools, nothing can hold them back.
