The common core standards uphold the idea that students need to be reading more nonfiction material in school. Currently, we have access to our literature textbook, but it does not provide enough nonfiction. As a result, students are less prepared for career or college after high school. I am an 8th grade reading teacher with class sizes around 35 students. Within these classrooms about 10 students have IEP's (Individualized Education Plan) with several learning disabilities. My school includes about 48% of students on the free and reduced lunch program. My students thrive on articles that can be read in one class period, in which we also discuss the text in small groups incorporating relevant reading strategies. It is best if we can also continue with the same topic, like in the book Amelia Lost.
