My students attend a large urban 9th through 12th grade high school in a diverse, financially strapped school district. When the local factories moved away, the community lost most well-paid, unskilled jobs. Thankfully, unlike some other depressed areas, our school board continues to support music, the arts, and physical education. We have a rich tradition of successful choral and instrumental ensembles. These groups are supported by numerous fundraisers and devoted parent boosters. For many students, competitive singing teaches discipline, strengthens memorization skills, encourages poise under pressure, and creates pride in school achievement. Students are also very interested in solo and small ensemble adjudication; they meet with me individually to select songs from the Wisconsin list.
