I teach at a small charter school in Utah. We are a Title 1 school, which means that many of our students come from disadvantaged backgrounds and some do not get good support from home. Many are still learning how to be good students. Many are getting their first taste of success by passing all their classes and seeing good reports sent home. They are all good kids. Being at a small school has many advantages. They are able to try a variety of extra-curricular activities, and if they are interested in something they can usually participate because there are always openings due to the small student body. Many find success in the theater, on the sports field or in other after school activities before they find it in the classroom. But success is contagious and if they can find it one arena, it is easy to translate that to the classroom.
