My students are 6th-8th graders in an urban school district. The school is a performing arts magnet, meaning students travel far to come. My students dance every day for elective or PE credit. All of my students are on free lunch and many of them have never taken an outside dance class before. I teach 4 periods of ballet a day and over 130 students learn the art. There is an equal amount of girls and boys in my beginning classes and only girls are in my advanced classes. Some of my students have incredible talent and ballet is helping them hone their dance technique. Many have aspirations to dance in high school and college but are not at the advanced level. Some of my students do cheer or sports after school and often come to my class with an injury. They do not know how to prevent their injuries yet and it is affecting their daily lives. In addition, some have not developed the foot muscles for ballet and need materials to work with them.
