My school is a hard working, but low income school. We have a large free and reduced income rate and a large population of Spanish speaking students. Most of my students don't have a chance to read classic stories or to fall in love with reading. There are many different circumstances in their lives that prevent this. Kids will not make connections and build their reading, unless they enjoy what they are reading. Our textbooks have stories about Gloria Estefan (although she is wonderful none of my students know who she is). Some of the textbooks in my school are older than I am. This is why we need better vocabulary building books for our students. Books they will fall in love with and want to read more of.
