I teach students from all over my school district. My students come to my classroom having already been expelled from "regular" schools. We call the "regular" schools Base Schools. This means that their behavior in their base school's classrooms was so severe and ongoing that they were required to complete a 20 day behavior modification stay at our school. They are troubled: some mentally, some physically, some emotionally. More often than not, they are academically behind in their education due to behavioral issues. This means that I teach "second graders" that may only have mastered kindergarten or some first grade skills. They need academic interventions, but they also need compassion, care, love, and acceptance. In addition to teaching the academics of second grade, I spend a lot of time teaching social skills and real world life skills. As a teacher, at my school, I am working hard to meet ALL of their needs.
